MFSD is pleased to announce that its co-founder, Pierfrancesco C. Fasano, will deliver a lecture for the European Patent Office (EPO) entitled “FRAND at a Crossroads: Strategic Use of PMAC-UPC Mediation and Arbitration in SEP Disputes”.
The European Patent Office, the executive arm of the European Patent Organisation, is one of the world’s leading intellectual property institutions. Serving 39 member states, it receives approximately 200,000 patent applications each year and grants more than 100,000 European patents annually, playing a central role in fostering innovation and technological development across Europe and beyond.
The lecture forms part of the EPO Academy’s patent litigation programme, organised in cooperation with the European Patent Lawyers Association (EPLAW) and the European Patent Litigators Association (EPLIT).
During the session, Pierfrancesco C. Fasano will explore the strategic use of the recently adopted Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre of the Unified Patent Court (PMAC-UPC) Mediation and Arbitration Rules in FRAND and Standard Essential Patent (SEP) disputes, examining how ADR procedures may complement UPC litigation and facilitate the efficient resolution of complex cross-border patent and licensing disputes.
Pierfrancesco C. Fasano serves as a member of the PMAC Expert Committee, a group of twelve European experts appointed to assist in the development of the PMAC framework, including the preparation of the Centre’s Rules and the evaluation and selection of PMAC neutrals.
The event is addressed to judges, lawyers, prosecutors, patent attorneys and paralegals involved in patent enforcement and litigation.
Registration is open via the EPO Academy website.

MFSD warmly congratulates Pierfrancesco C. Fasano on this important appointment and is honoured to contribute to the broader discussion on the future of patent dispute resolution in Europe, where litigation and ADR are increasingly viewed as complementary tools within a modern and efficient system of justice.
The views expressed during the lecture will be personal to the speaker and shall not be regarded as representing the official position of the Unified Patent Court, the Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre (PMAC), or any of their governing bodies.
